So You Want To Be A Bounty Hunter?

Of all the things you could choose to do with your time (and it does take a LOT of your time), working your way into being a "bounty hunter" is a rather unusual task. That makes it pretty well suited to rather unusual people.

This was already going through my head when I started to realize the depth and breadth of involvement and knowledge needed to do this right. And that's when Ronin asked:

So, You Want to Be a Bounty Hunter?

It turns out, there's a lot more involved than showing up at Mr Bad Guy's house and asking him nicely to reconsider his lifestyle choices. For starters:
  • Where is Mr Bad Guy these days?
  • Who knows where he might be hiding?
  • How are you going to get in there (legally)?
  • Is he going to resist your efforts? Are his friends or family?
  • What do you do with him when you -do- manage to find him and cuff him?

Private Investigator or Bounty Hunter ?   Yes to Both.

Anybody really interested in knowing about what we do should spend some time watching detective movies - no kidding. We just spent hours last night training on our specific approach to investigative work to track down someone who has a strong interest in hiding and staying hidden.

After that we spent several more hours actually driving, sneaking around, making radio calls, telephone calls, climbing fences, interviewing family members, developing informants, and yes: handcuffing Mr Bad Guy (actually we grabbed several last night).

The second part might be what got me originally interested in this endeavor ... but it's the first part of the night that made it possible. A skilled investigator is much more important to our efforts than imagined. None of our defendants are trying to find us, so that they can jam their wrists into our handcuffs.

What Does a Bounty Hunter Need to do First?

Start here:
  • Licensing and certification: get started asap and do this right.
  • Train to do the physical parts correctly and safely.
  • Learn to do the less obvious (but more important) parts effectively and efficiently.

  2. No certification is currently necessary. There are schools out there but I have no knowledge of them. I prefer OJT anyway.
